How to Actually Enjoy Your Family Photography Session

How to Actually Enjoy Your Family Photography Session (Yes, Really!)

Let’s be honest — not many people think they’ll enjoy having their photos taken. In fact, most dads (and some mums) arrive at my sessions looking like they’ve been dragged along. 😅

But here’s the fun part: the same people often leave saying things like:
“That was so easy!”
“Thank you for making it relaxing and fun!”
“I’m so glad we did this!”

No one wants awkward photos. Not me, not you, and definitely not your kids. Here’s how we make your family photography session relaxed, fun, and full of real connection.

1. A Location That Works for YOUR Family

You don’t need to force a beach session if your family aren't “beach people.” Love the bush? A local field? Or just want to stay cozy at home? Perfect — we can shoot there. Safety, comfort, and familiarity = natural, relaxed photos.

2. Time of Day Matters

Full sunlight can be gorgeous, but let’s be honest — it's hot and glarey and people just want to sit in aircon and eat their lunch. Depending on where you want your photos, can mean time needs to be considered. Our beautiful East Coast beaches are perfect in the evenings for example.

Chat with me about what works best for your family so everyone’s at their happiest.

3. Genuine Interactions Beat Poses Every Time

Most of the best photos aren’t the ones where everyone is staring at the camera. They’re the moments where you’re talking, laughing, hugging, tickling, running, or just snuggling together. That’s the magic of lifestyle family photography.

4. I’ll Prompt, Not Pose

Forget stiff, awkward poses. Instead, I’ll guide you with little prompts:

  • Tell each other your favourite movie

  • Walk together holding hands

  • Share a funny secret

These simple prompts create natural moments that truly capture your family’s personality.

5. Trust Your Photographer

I’ve been doing this long enough to know how to make everyone feel comfortable. Trust me to guide the session and capture your family in a way that feels authentic — not forced.

6. It’s Not a Photoshoot… It’s Quality Time

Your session isn’t a chore. It’s an opportunity to spend time together, laugh, play, and create memories. I’m just there with my camera to turn those moments into beautiful keepsakes you’ll treasure forever.
