Top Tips for an Amazing Family Photography Session

Top Tips for an Amazing Family Photography Session (From a Central Coast Family Photographer)

Thinking about booking a family photography session? Or maybe you’ve already locked one in and you’re in full “what do we wear / how do we behave / will my kids cooperate?” mode. Don’t worry — you’re not alone! As a Central Coast family photographer, I’ve seen it ALL… and trust me, the best sessions are the ones where families show up, relax and enjoy the chaos a little.

Here are my TOP TIPS to help you make the most of your session and get photos you’ll absolutely love:

1. Be Realistic (aka: embrace the beautiful chaos)

Here’s the truth: kids are kids. They wiggle, they wander, they get distracted by rocks, bugs, and the sudden urge to tell you a very long story. And honestly? That’s where the magic happens.

Some of the best moments in lifestyle family photography are the unplanned ones — the giggles, the cuddles, the tiny hand holding yours. Don’t stress about perfect smiles or everyone looking at the camera at the same time. Imperfect is often perfect.

Relax, breathe, and let your family be exactly who they are. I promise those genuine moments make the most meaningful images.

2. Outfits Matter (but they shouldn’t stress you out)

Let’s talk clothes! For beautiful, cohesive photos, aim for coordinated outfits rather than matching ones. Think: soft, natural tones, earthy colours, linen textures, and pieces that feel comfortable and true to your style.

Avoid bright logos or neon colours — they tend to distract from the connection in the image.

And remember: if everyone feels good in what they’re wearing, it’ll show!

3. Trust Your Photographer

When you book a Central Coast family photographer, you’re not just hiring someone with a camera — you’re getting guidance and direction from someone who wants you to look and feel amazing.

Share your ideas, ask questions, tell me if there are certain shots you must have. Clear communication helps us create the session you’re dreaming of, but once we’re out there… trust the process. I’ve got you!

4. Be On Time

Arriving a little early means you can settle in, breathe, fix that flyaway hair, and let the kids burn off a little energy before we start.

You’ll feel more relaxed, and your photos will show it.

5. HAVE FUN! (yes, really)

The best sessions are the ones where families simply enjoy being together. Play, laugh, snuggle, tickle the kids, run along the beach — whatever feels natural.

When you’re having fun, the photos look effortless, relaxed and full of real connection. That’s my favourite kind of family photography. If you're wanting stiff, staged images with all the kids looking at the camera with fake smiles, perhaps don't book with me! haha.
